GMB Support Work Stories
Member Working Conditions 2026:
A GMB union representative recently supported a member through a very difficult period at work, demonstrating the value of having someone on your side when problems arise.
The member contacted the rep feeling extremely distressed after leaving the workplace due to concerns about ongoing bullying and feeling isolated. Our rep arranged to meet quickly to listen, offer support and understand the situation.
It became clear the member was facing significant pressures both inside and outside of work, including caring responsibilities for an elderly parent who had mobility difficulties linked to a developing health condition, and had concerns for family who were abroad. All of which appeared not to be acknowledged. There was also uncertainty around an existing flexible working arrangement had also added to the stress.
With guidance from the union rep, the member sought medical advice and received a diagnosis requiring time away from work to recover. The rep also worked with the member to ensure management understood the full circumstances and that the member’s concerns were properly raised and acknowledged. Following discussions with management, a better working environment was negotiated. Their management has tried to implement a Work and Well being Passport but our member is reluctant to agree to some points.
Most importantly, the member felt listened to, supported and no longer alone in dealing with the situation. Afterwards, they expressed sincere thanks for the support received during a very challenging time.
This case is a reminder that union membership means access to advice, advocacy and someone who will stand beside you when it matters most.

Equal Pay Claim 2025:
An Equal pay claim for a pay difference between a male and female who were doing the same work. Was raised on what actually constitutes an equal pay claim, which our representative progressed from all the information and correspondence with our union member.
The union member was successful in getting a better deal as a result of obtaining support from GMB. Something the employer could have resolved but did not.

Pay Grade Change 2024:
A department in Tameside MBC had three pay grade levels for their staff. The employees in the two lower grades, raised with management that their grades did not represent the work they were expected to do, in other words they should be higher.
Management engaged with staff and HR on the pay grade increase, which resulted in the claim being declined.
Union branch representatives were approached about the matter by union members. After it was assessed and then formally submitted by our union branch to TMBC HR. The pay grade increase by one grade was assessed and approved. In addition, this included a back pay to the submission date by the union.
During further discussions by the union representatives with HR. An additional back pay was agreed in relation to a part of the gap between the earlier declined request with management and the date the union submitted the new request.
Just a quick summary of how your union branch has helped union members.
