Emma Grede, co-founder of the fashion brand Skims has declared that working from home is “career suicide.”
She’s not entirely wrong about the problem she’s identifying: Proximity bias is real. The fact that the people who show up physically are the ones who get promoted is real, and this disproportionately impacts women and carers.
But here’s where she lost many of us. The solution to a broken office culture isn’t to drag everyone back into it, it’s to fix the culture instead. To make flexibility the norm, not the exception.
