Some Thoughts This Month For Us All:

Happy August

The Haze and the Heather

August is the vibrant green of early summer, now deepened into a rich canvas

There is a distinct temperature to August. While it brings the year’s highest sea temperatures and the lingering possibility of sudden, intense heatwaves, the nights begin to pull in just a fraction earlier. You’ll notice the dawn coming a little later, and by mid-month, the evening air carries a faint coolness that wasn’t there in July.

In the countryside, the landscape begin a spectacular final transformation with the moorlands displaying blankets of purple heather.

Because school is out for the summer, the country throws open its doors. Surrendering to outdoor life, knowing how fleeting it can be. Towns and cities burst into bloom with cultural giants as Edinburgh becoming the undisputed arts capital of the world, while London hosts the vibrant Notting Hill Carnival.

If our bustling coastlines and attractive locations feel overwhelming, the UK in August also offers areas of tranquility. Across the country, people can take refuge in the shade of ancient woodlands, find quiet riverbanks for late-afternoon picnics, or head to the less-trodden paths all around you, to breathe in that freedom without the crowds.
